    New Zealand share-milker Chap Zweirs was one of the first in the World to put the new DeLaval milking system through its paces.

A new DeLaval rotary milking system will by unveiled at the Elmore Field Days next month, with the Rotary E100 system the result of a multi-million dollar development program.

DeLaval Oceania sales director Justin Thompson said the project aimed to created the best rotary for farming conditions in Australia and New Zealand.

‘‘We’ve applied everything we’ve learned over the last 130 years designing and installing dairy systems around the world, to create a rotary that meets the unique challenges of the varied input systems and pasture-based dairy farming common in Australia and New Zealand,’’ Mr Thompson said.

‘‘For the last three years we’ve had key members of the global engineering team focused on creating a new benchmark for rotary systems that directly addresses the needs of Australian and New Zealand farmers.’’

Launched in New Zealand in June, the DeLaval Rotary E100 has undergone extensive testing on two test farms.

The rotary system features a customisable entry and exit, depending on whether you prefer a 1.5 cow entry or single cow entry, on deck feeding and the power to manage the rotation speed.

Mr Thompson said there had been good early interest in the system from Australian farmers ahead of the Elmore launch, following good outcomes on a test farm in Tirau, a small town in northern New Zealand, where a 500-cow herd put the E100 through its paces over the 2016-17 season.

‘‘For us, cow comfort comes first and I’ve never seen animals so calm in a cowshed,’’ farm owner Jack Scheres said.

‘‘It identifies the cow as she comes in, it tells me milk production or milk loss, and it will automatically draft any cow based on parameters I set,’’ share-milker Chap Zweirs said.

■DeLaval will be at site 991 at the Elmore Field Days from October 3 to 5.
